Climate Change

The government has made significant and meaningful progress in tackling climate change but Nate has continued to advocate for greater ambitions against this fight. On June 5, 2019, Nate tabled Bill C-454  in the House of Commons. This would commit Canada to effectively eliminate national greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

On June 5, 2019, Nathaniel said the following in the House of Commons:

“Mr. Speaker, I am honoured to introduce the net-zero greenhouse gas emissions bill. This government has made significant and meaningful progress to tackle climate change, but greater ambition is now required to meet our national, intergenerational and our moral obligations. Science demands greater action.”

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change notes, “in model pathways with no or limited overshoot of 1.5°C, global net anthropogenic CO2 emissions declined by about 45% from the 2010 levels by 2030, reaching net-zero by 2050.

Our international allies are already undertaking this difficult work. The U.K., in early May, published a road map to net-zero by 2050. The EU Commission, and EU Parliament, have adopted the same standards.

We have made important progress such as price on pollution, phasing out coal, slashing methane emissions, significant investments in public transit, clean energies and more, but the science demands greater ambition. That is why the bill is so important.”

On July 31, 2018, Nate hosted a town hall at the Fox Theatre on Queen St E. They did a free screening of the Water Brothers Plastic Ocean episode. This was followed by a discussion with the Water Brothers, Tyler Mifflin and Alex Mifflin.

Later that year, Nate demonstrated his determination, when he called for an emergency debate to be held on Climate Change in the House of Commons. He illustrated that, “that the report makes it clear that the world only has a few years to ramp up efforts to reduce global warming, otherwise the planet is on course for a disastrous 3°C of warming”

After Nate’s Youth Council expressed their concerns with Climate Change, he asked a question to the Prime Minister on behalf of them.

Nate spoke with former Green Party Leader Elizabeth May about her climate advocacy, lessons we might learn from the pandemic, and the need for greater ambition and action to tackle the climate crisis. You can listen to the podcast here.
