One-time top-up to the Canada Housing Benefit
With the rising cost of living, our government is delivering support for those who need it most. Every Canadian deserves a safe and affordable place to call home – but for many, it is getting harder to afford increased rent or to even find housing they can afford.
Starting today, nearly 2 million renters across the country will be able to apply for a one-time top-up payment of $500 to help with the cost of housing. This is on top of our government's previous investments to provide an average of $2,500 to tens of thousands of Canadians across the country through the Canada Housing Benefit.
As of December 12, 2022, Canadians can apply for the one-time top-up to the Canada Housing Benefit that will provide a one-time payment of $500 to renters who:
· are at least 15 years of age as of December 1, 2022
· have an adjusted family net income in 2021 of $20,000 or less for individuals, or $35,000 or less for families
· paid at least 30 percent of their adjusted family net income on rent for their own principal residence in Canada in 2022
